You can negotiate the best price in the world — and lose everything if your spray bottles leak. Quality is not a feeling; it is a specification with measurable pass/fail criteria. This guide gives you the testing standards, acceptance criteria, and certification requirements to write a quality specification that any competent Chinese factory can execute — and that third-party inspectors can verify.

1. Leak Testing: The Non-Negotiable

Every spray bottle Desikyspray produces undergoes 100% vacuum leak testing. Here is what you should require:

  • Test method: Vacuum leak tester. Bottle is filled with water, pressurised to -0.04 to -0.06 MPa (vacuum), held for 5-10 seconds. Any air bubbles escaping = fail.
  • Sample size: 100% of production units (not sampling).
  • Acceptance criteria: Zero leakers. AQL is not appropriate for leak testing — this is a safety/functionality test, not an appearance test.
  • Why 100% matters: A 0.5% leak rate on 10,000 units = 50 leaking bottles. If those 50 reach end customers, you get returns, bad reviews, and lost accounts. The cost of 100% testing (automated, <0.5 seconds per unit) is far less than the cost of returns.

2. Drop Test: Real-World Durability

Test ParameterStandard
Drop height1.2m (simulates dropping from counter/table height)
Drop surfaceConcrete or steel plate
Orientations3 drops per bottle: (1) bottom-down, (2) side-down, (3) top-down (45° angle)
Fill conditionBottle filled to nominal capacity with water, cap secured
Sample size20 bottles per production batch (per AQL S-2 special inspection level)
Acceptance criteriaNo rupture, no leak after drop. Minor cosmetic scratches acceptable. Cap must remain secured.

3. Spray Pattern Consistency

  • Spray pattern test: Hold bottle at 15cm from target paper. Pump 10 times. Measure spray diameter and assess pattern uniformity. Acceptable: circular pattern within ±20% of specification diameter. Unacceptable: dripping, sputtering, irregular spray cone, or stream instead of mist.
  • Volume per stroke test: Weigh bottle, pump 10 strokes, weigh again, divide by 10. Must be within ±15% of specification.
  • Priming test: Count pumps to first mist after dry storage (24h). ≤3 pumps is excellent; ≤5 is acceptable; >5 indicates pump mechanism issue.

4. Material Certification Documents

CertificationScopeRequired For
REACHEU chemical regulation — restricts SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern)All products sold in the EU
RoHSRestriction of hazardous substances (lead, mercury, cadmium, etc.)EU market; increasingly required globally
FDA 21 CFRUS food-contact material regulationFood-grade spray bottles (oil sprayers, cooking sprays)
LFGBGerman food-contact material regulationFood-grade products sold in Germany
BPA-FreeNo Bisphenol A contentConsumer-facing claim; cosmetic and food applications
SGS / Intertek Test ReportThird-party lab physical/chemical testAny market; provides buyer confidence
ISO 9001:2015Quality management system certificationFactory-level certification; not product-specific

FAQ

What is the most common quality problem with spray bottles from China?

Leaking — specifically at the cap-to-bottle thread interface and the dip tube connection. This is why 100% vacuum leak testing is non-negotiable. The second most common issue is inconsistent spray pattern (sputtering or streaming instead of misting), which usually indicates a poorly manufactured nozzle or incompatible pump mechanism.

How do I write a quality specification that Chinese factories understand?

Use numbers, not adjectives. "Good quality" means nothing. "Vacuum leak test at -0.05 MPa, 100% of units, zero leakers" means everything. Include: (1) Quantitative specifications with tolerances, (2) Test methods (how to measure each spec), (3) Sample sizes per inspection level, (4) Pass/fail criteria, (5) Reference photos of acceptable vs unacceptable conditions. A one-page spec sheet saves a thousand email arguments.
